Can you undergo FTM surgery if you’re over 50? The answer is yes!
Top surgery when you’re older
Getting top surgery is an important decision, whether you identify as trans or not. It is a big positive step that can be taken at any age as long as you are in good health. It is not your chronological age is not the determining factor when it comes to FTM surgery, but your overall well-being. If you are in perfect health, then your body will have no trouble responding to the surgery. If you have diabetes, blood pressure problems, heart, liver or kidney issues, you may not be a good candidate for this procedure. When you meet with your surgeon, they will go over your entire medical history, so it’s important to be honest. You may still be able to undergo top surgery if you’re in overall good health despite having diabetes or other health issues.
Your mental health also plays a role in having top surgery over 50. Your surgeon may ask that you work with a psychologist prior to your procedure to ensure you can handle the emotional changes you will experience once your chest has been masculinized.
Finally, if you smoke, there are higher risks of surgical complications. Smoking tampers with the body’s natural healing process and can hinder blood flow and increase your chance of post-surgical infections.
Get the support you need
With any kind of surgery in which you will be put under anaesthesia, you will need someone to drive you home afterwards. You will also need to take time off work while you recover. If your friends and family are supportive of your decision to undergo top surgery, all the better. You will need people around for the first few days to help you as you heal. You should also think about your job and if you will be able to take time off. You will need around 10-14 days at home while you recoup. Furthermore, you may be more tired after your procedure even if you are in good health. As we age, no matter how fit and healthy we are, our body tends to get tired more easily. It is perfectly normal to grow tired easily when you are over 50, but your surgeon may recommend that you take an extra few days off work to really give your body a chance to get its energy back.
